Original source of handcrafted etching presses in wood and steel
I am Bill Ritchie, owner of the Halfwood Press, has been designing and making etching presses since 2004. I specialize in hand-built intaglio presses for printmakers of all ages and levels of skill.
Currently I make three sizes. The Mini is the smallest, with a 6-inch wide bed for printing plates five inches wide on their shortest dimension. Click on the Show Me the Mini to learn more.
The Galleon is next, with a 9-inch wide, rack-driven bed I make for printing plates up to 8-inches wide on their shortest dimension. The 2010 model also has synchronous pressure screws. Click on Show me the Galleon to learn more.
The Mariner has a 12-inch wide bed for plates up to eleven inches on their shortest dimension. The rack-driven bed is 36-inches long, allowing for plates of about 24 inches in length. The 2010 model has synchronous pressure screws. Click on Show me the Mariner to learn more.
All the presses include what you need to get started printing. The felts, for example, are included in the price. For the Mini you get two felts--all that you need for printing small, thin metal or plastic plates. The Galleon and the Mariner come with the full three-thickness felts as recommended in most printmaking books.
Items are being added as options, such as a printing chase, bench clamp, and collector's brass beds. All presses come with instructions, some of them on DVD, and also you get online support from me if you email me.
